Joint research opportunity for extracellular vesicles characterization

SRC program

Timegate Instruments, VTT, and the University of Oulu are offering an opportunity for a doctoral program with Timegated® Raman spectroscopy and extracellular vesicles. Timegate is one of the partners in I4WORLD - Imaging and Characterisation for a Sustainable World (2022-2027).

We are expecting diseases to grow, so we need better techniques to solve related issues. Concerning cells, we can get much better data with time-gated Raman technology. It´s a cost-effective way to characterize extracellular vesicles. This project offers also a great opportunity to live in Oulu, Finland, and experience the exotic, arctic environment, states Seppo Vainio, Scientific Director of Kvantum Institute and Vice Director of Flagship GeneCellNano, University of Oulu.

Cell behavior monitoring and optimization with time-gated Raman technology

Time-gated Raman offers novel means to monitor and optimize cell behavior during the growth and associated secretome production. This SRC capitalizes on human keratinocyte cultures aiming to reveal time-gated Raman-based optimal signal red outs for cell growth and secretome yields.

– The I4WORLD doctoral degree program will provide a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary research environment. Specifically, the participation of Timegate Instrument in this program opens a unique opportunity for a researcher who is seeking to pursue a career in a more vocational setting, with an option to also acquire experience from a business perspective. I came to Finland with a similar doctoral program. After finishing my Ph.D. studies, I have been employed and enjoyed my time here with my family, describes Dr. Shuvashis Das Gupta, Senior Application Engineer of Timegate Instruments.

Towards a time-gated Raman-derived algorithm depicting optimized human keratinocyte stem cell bioreactor-based growth and secretome yields - a potential research idea is under the Good Health and Wellbeing research theme. The program will include individual scientific training given under expert supervision and during the secondments by the partner organizations.

Applying for the program

Applications should be submitted by January 31st, 2023.

Supervisors in the program will be Prof. Seppo Vainio (DN), Research prof. Jussi Hiltunen (Sensing and Integration, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland), D.Sc. (Eng.), Doc. Satu Ojala (Environmental and Chemical Engineering) and Mari Tenhunen (Timegate Instruments ltd).

I4WORLD is based on taking the benefits of novel imaging and characterization methods beyond the traditional borders between research fields towards achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. The program is within a well-established doctoral training environment at the University of Oulu in Finland and it is co-funded by the program-Sklodowska-Curie-Action (COFUND) of the European Union funding program Horizon Europe.

The program will train 25 Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) with a comprehensive understanding of environmental, economic, and social sustainability. This trains future research and innovation leaders for the global challenges of sustainability transition in research themes aligned with the UN SDGs: Good Health and Well-being, Affordable and Clean Energy, Sustainable Industries and Production and Clean Water, Biodiversity, and Environment.

Partners of this specific research are Timegate and VTT - Technical Research Centre of Finland. Timegate will provide the state-of-the-art time-gated Raman spectrometer for the study. In this program, Time-gated Raman could be used as an example in research of Extracellular Vesicles (EVs).
