Do I need to have the original Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns to play Kohan: Ahriman's Gift?

No. Ahriman's Gift is an entirely new game and does not require the original Immortal Sovereigns to play.

How will the Ahriman's Gift storyline tie into the Kohan world?

Ahriman's Gift is a prequel to Immortal Sovereigns and opens with the evil Ceyah forces slowly taking over the world of Khaldun.  Roxanna Javidan has been chosen by the forces of the Shadow to be their champion and lead the Shadow into a new age of never-ending darkness.

What are the main differences between Kohan: Ahriman's Gift and Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns?

One of the biggest changes is the improvement in the strategic artificial intelligence.  We feel that the new artificial intelligence is some of the best real-time strategy artificial intelligence ever.  More strategic options will be another noticeable difference.  The addition of new units will open up new strategies for players to implement, plan for, and react to. Many of the new units have more specialized roles, designed to counter certain Immortal Sovereigns strategies or counter other Ahriman's Gift units. Some of the new units are also at the higher end of the power structure, to encourage longer games with more strategic building plans.  Additionally, we added two new game types, our own take on the traditional King of the Hill game type, as well as an anti-rush game type called "Turtle."

What ports have to be open on a firewall to allow me to play multiplayer games?

You will likely experience difficulty in using Arcade or playing games if you are behind a firewall or a similarly restrictive proxy server. Arcade and the multiplayer modes of supported games can be used only if certain data is free to travel back and forth across your Internet connection. If your firewall is set to restrict access, Arcade cannot verify information in its database, send you the chat responses from other users, nor send you the game server lists. Arcade was certainly not designed to “work around” your firewall!
Since there are many, many different types of firewalls and network environments, our tech support information cannot guide you with each one. Check your firewall's security settings, or contact your administrator.
If you are behind a firewall and are able to change its settings, Arcade needs the following ports open in order to function (more ports might also be necessary in order to run certain games). Unless specified otherwise, the TCP ports are:

6667 (IRC)
80 (HTTP)
3783 (Voice Chat Port)
27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat)
28900 (Master Server List Request)
29900 (GP Connection Manager)
29901 (GP Search Manager)
13139 (Custom UDP Pings)
In reality, getting Arcade to work on certain restrictive networks may even be a little harder than opening these ports. DirectPlay games in all likelihood will not launch properly at all.
Disabling / Permission - We do not recommend disabling your firewall. Disabling it will not make it open up the ports it has already closed. Instead, you need to configure it to allow access to Arcade. This is usually called “giving permission,” and can be accomplished quickly by following these steps:

  • Black Ice - Set the security level to low.
  • ZoneAlarm - Set ZoneAlarm to recognize Arcade as a part of your Local Network and set both local and Internet settings to “Low.”

Hardware Software

I am having problems installing/running Kohan: Ahriman's Gift under Windows 2000 and/or Windows XP.  What can I do?

Windows 2000/XP needs administrator rights to run a SecuROM protected application. SecuROM uses well documented low-level commands to access a CD/DVD-ROM drive. When Microsoft developed Windows 2000/XP they made security levels more restrictive and also disallowed low-level commands without having administrator rights. Starting a SecuROM protected application leads to a 'No disc inserted.' or 'Wrong disc inserted.' message when started on a PC running Windows 2000/XP without administrator rights. The access rights will need to be changed accordingly.

I have an AMD processor and Kohan: Ahriman's Gift keeps crashing.  What can I do?

If you have an AMD processor and have been experiencing crash problems since the 1.1.0 patch please update your BIOS. This has solved the problem for every AMD user so far.

I have Guard Dog on my computer. Will these cause any problems?

Guard Dog, an Internet monitoring utility, prevents Kohan from running the copy protection check correctly and prevents the game from running.

I have Pretty Good Privacy installed on my machine. Will this create any problems?

Kohan will not run if you have Pretty Good Privacy installed on your machine. This may change as we get updates for SafeDisk 2. For the moment you will have to uninstall PGP to be able to play Kohan, disabling isn't enough.

I'm running Windows 95 and I keep getting “A required .DLL file, WS2_32.DLL, was not found.” How can I fix this?

You will need the Windows 95 Winsock update. The file and installation instructions can be found here (Microsoft website).

My mouse keeps freezing up. Is there anything I can do to fix the problem?

So far this has only been reported as a problem with the Microsoft Intellimouse, but this may work for other makes as well:  Go to your System Properties then go to the Performance Tab, click on the Graphics tab. Then just adjust the Hardware acceleration tab back to three quarters of the way.

Why do I keep getting a DirectDraw error that prevents me from playing Kohan?

If you are getting the “C:\kohan\source\system\DirectDraw.ccp(1230) : (FATL) : Couldn't create buffer surface” error then Direct Draw does not gave enough memory to perform the operation. The most likely problem is that your video card doesn't have at least 4MB of video RAM for 2D acceleration.

My system meets min specs but should it run this slow?

Generally Kohan runs well even on a minimum spec machine. If you are experiencing severe slow downs in the game our first recommendation is to update your video drivers. Then upgrade to DirectX 8.0a found on the Kohan CD.

Kohan is having trouble running in my Kenwood 72X CD drive. What can I do?

First try step 1. If that doesn't work move on to step 2. If those don't solve the problem, undo the changes you made in step 2.

  • Check the Kenwood web page for a firmware update for your CD drive.
  • In BIOS, please disable UDMA or change from AUTO to None. Then set it to PIO MODE4. In Device manager, please check DMA ON.

Will my NVIDIA video card present any problems with Kohan?

If you own an NVIDIA card please follow this link. There is important information for you to be aware of. The update specifically refers to Hercules cards, but it was addressed to all NVIDIA card owners. If you are having trouble with Kohan crashing to your desktop this may provide a solution. http://us.hercules.com/support/readtechnote.php3?id=49

I have a CD-RW drive. Will I experience any problems running Kohan?

Terminate all programs running in the background especially those for CD burners and rewriters since these have been known to block the copy protection software's attempt to read the special data.

How can I reset the Kohan CD key? The easiest way to do this is to use the Run command from the Windows Start menu.

  • Click Start
  • Click Run
  • Click Browse
  • Locate the Kohan root directory
  • Double click on the Kohan .exe
  • Now you should have "C:Program Files/Kohan/Kohan.exe" in the Open command line. (NOTE: The " must be in the line to function correctly)
  • Now double click just behind the last "
  • Type in a space and the word resetcdkey.
  • The final version should look like this if you used the default install directory.
    "C:Program Files/Kohan/Kohan.exe" resetcdkey
    Click OK

  • Why do I keep getting an error when trying to watch game films?

Game films must be viewed by the version of Kohan that recorded the film. For example you won't be able to watch a film recorded in version 1.0.7 if you have patched up to version 1.0.9 and vice versa.
